Glossaries solve 4 critical issues

1

How can students master English concepts they don't understand?

If your child has forgotten the concepts or is ready for more, our GOLD Glossary of Literary Devices is here to help! Aligned with the Australian curriculum for each year level, the glossary includes 4 short lessons to help students excel in both classroom and home learning.Ā

Lesson 1 teaches how to use the glossary and shows how literary devices make writing come to lifeā€”key techniques teachers look for. It includes:

  1. A comprehensive Glossary of Literary Devices of curriculum concepts.
  2. Clear age-appropriate explanations and engaging examples.

Our glossary empowers students with the knowledge they need to be productive, practise effectively, and soar ahead in English!

2

How can students analyse classroom texts if they don't know what to look for?

Each curriculum concept is paired with an English code, or Eng-CodeĀ®. These simple yet powerful tools help students link the curriculum to classroom texts, supporting essential analysis and assessment preparation.Ā

Lesson 2 teaches students how to Eng-CodeĀ® published texts by identifying literary devices. They learn to spot everything from punctuation and noun-verb groups to metaphors, puns, and more! Our Eng-CodesĀ® make learning visible and help students extract powerful language to build vocabulary and prepare for assessment tasks. Analysing picture books, novels, advertising, and poetry has never been easier!

Our Eng-CodesĀ® streamline learning from Foundation (Prep) to Year 12. Each year, new curriculum concepts are seamlessly added to the glossary, fostering fluency and accelerating achievement. Start now to help your child build the literary skills to confidently respond to authors like Roald Dahl in the early years and William Shakespeare in the senior years!Ā

How can students build vocabulary to write powerfully?

Lesson 3 teaches students that 'stimulus' classroom texts are an invaluable source of language and ideas they can use to excel in assessments. This lesson includes a downloadable scaffold to help students capture key words, phrases, and evidence from texts. Each scaffold provides space to use our simple Eng-CodesĀ® to link curriculum concepts to the language they record. This is important to prepare for analytical test questions and to ensure students use a variety of literary devices in their writing to demonstrate achievement.

In the early years, students demonstrate their understanding through illustrations and beginner writing. As they progress, more space is allocated for writing and analysis of increasingly complex literary devices. Go for GOLD in English. Start now!

How can students transform published language into their own words?

In Lesson 4, students transform the language recorded in their Literary Language Journal into their own words, deepening their understanding, expanding their vocabulary, and developing their literary voice. They experiment with technology to explore synonyms and produce language variations to analyse their impact on meaning.

Using the Glossary of Literary Devices, students Eng-CodeĀ® their writing to demonstrate curriculum achievement, edit confidently, and produce evidence of learning that boosts final results.

5

How can students edit their work if they donā€™t know what to fix?

Our glossaries include a suite of hands-on activities to guide students through the steps, use our glossary to Eng-CodeĀ® their own writing, and see their work from the teacher's perspective. Our resources uniquely make academic achievement visible, empowering students to independently identify the concepts they've applied, spot any they've missed, and edit for success.

Master language across all subjects!

Success in Maths, Science, History, Music, and other subjects relies on understanding and using topic-specific language. Our GOLD Glossary Of Literary Devices and 4 simple steps equip students for academic success across all subjects by helping them recognise key words and phrases in the texts they study.

In English, they develop these skills by exploring different genres - such as narratives, persuasive speeches, advertisements, poetry, and more. By identifying key words and changes in register (language use), students learn to respond with precision in assessments across all subjects.

These skills also empower students to communicate confidently beyond school, including in job interviews, university, teamwork, and relationships. Mastering the right language for each context is the key to lifelong success.

Testimonials

Sarah J

My son is in Year 5 and was at risk of failing English. From lesson 1, his eyes lit up and the cogs started turning. His whole demeanor changed and, possibly for the first time, he began to understand the purpose for learning English. And he's keen to do more! Highly recommended!

Kate K

The Glossary Of Literary Devices is worth its weight in GOLD! My child is in grade 10 and this makes analysing Shakespeare a breeze!

Bec W

My daughter is in Year 12 and her English task was to write an article for a teen magazine. She was under the impression that she had to write in casual language. She submitted her checkpoint and received terrible feedback. She had no idea why. A friend recommended this glossary and we ploughed through it together and she could see her mistakes. We're happy with the results, however we wish we'd known about TeacherTalk sooner!
