Glossaries solve critical issues
1
How can students excel in English if they don't remember the concepts?
The Australian curriculum is complex and there's a lot to know! While it provides a glossary, it's neither comprehensive nor easily accessible by students. Open our V9-aligned glossaries on classroom devices to provide students with:
- Continual access to the concepts they need to know.
- Age-appropriate explanations and engaging examples.
- Our Eng-CodeĀ® annotation tool to analyse texts and prepare for assessments.
Ease the pressure of re-teaching often-forgotten concepts! Here are some samples:
Note: The Australian English Curriculum (version 9) defines a literary device as a structural or language technique used to shape meaning, often for aesthetic or stylistic purposes (e.g., narrative structure, characterisation, setting, rhetorical devices, and figurative language). The terms 'literary language,' 'language devices,' 'language features,' and 'figurative language' are used in the curriculum, each referring to a subset of language devices. We refer to all these terms collectively as 'literary devices' because most students understand that a device is an object or tool that serves a specific function. We love that it abbreviates to GOLD in our Glossary Of Literary Devices!
2
How can we make learning visible and measurable?
It's easy! Each concept is paired with an Eng-CodeĀ®, helping students break down texts by annotating literary devices and analysing how they create meaning. Challenge them to āhuntā for metaphors, puns, and more. Or target individual concepts and Eng-CodeĀ® patterns in punctuation in the early years, text connectives in the middle years, and recurring motifs and symbolism in the senior years.
Now you can see what your students detect (and miss) in the texts they read!
3
How can students remember complex vocabulary?
Our glossaries include a downloadable Literary Language Journal template that acts like a sieve helping students extract topic language and literary devices to respond to texts with authority. Our template:
- Provides essential space to record key language and ideas from texts.
- Provides space to record our Eng-CodesĀ® which are vital to compare the use of literary devices across genres and media, and to ensure students capture a variety of language devices to prepare for assessments.
- Streamlines learning from Prep to Year 12, supporting differentiation as students progress from illustrations to written language.
Build a bank of curriculum-aligned, context-specific vocabulary during reading groups, individually, or as a class - and go for GOLD in English!

How can students transform published language into their own words?Ā
Our GOLD Glossaries Of Literary Devices include 4 short lessons to help students play with published language, experiment with synonyms, and analyse their impact on meaning. Our resources give students access to literary devices that would otherwise be out of reach, supporting them in analysing both the obvious and subtle literary techniques that create impact and help them develop their own literary voice.
5
How can we tailor learning for each child?
Our GOLD Glossaries Of Literary Devices include activities to guide students to Eng-CodeĀ® their own writing to see what the teacher sees, identify their weaknesses and edit for success. Use our activities to bolster your English lessons, literacy groups, reading rotations, and homework tasks.
6
How can we accelerate learning across all English units?
Comparing the use of literary devices across genres, authors, contexts, and media has never been easier! Whether studying narrative, persuasive, informative, poetry, journalism, TV, or movies, our GOLD Glossaries of Literary Devices is your essential classroom tool.
Deliver our 4 short lessons at the beginning of each unit and use our resources for targeted learning across all English units.
7
How can we boost English results for all?
Our resources provide a whole-school approach, growing with students from Foundation (Prep) Year and building on familiar structures each year. Theyāre easy to differentiate, streamlining learning across genres, classrooms, and year levels.
Support 'reluctant' writers to put pencil to paper easily with our simple Eng-CodesĀ®. Challenge them to Eng-CodeĀ® 3 literary devices, then 5, then 10, and gradually progress to the next step.
Support enthusiastic writers to respond purposefully to stimulus texts, mimicking literary style by extracting language and devices to write with authority, while mastering techniques to develop their own voice. Help them Eng-CodeĀ® devices in both stimulus texts and their own work to demonstrate connection, meet criteria, and reach their potential.

How can we address the challenges of AI technology?
It has never been more vital to collect evidence of student learning and ensure the authenticity of their work. Our resources address the impact of AI technology head-on, providing visual tools that make learning visible and measurable at every step.
