About

Hi, I'm Kylie Van Grinsven
Welcome to TeacherTalk!

“Words can be like X-rays, if you use them properly – they’ll go through anything. You read and you’re pierced. That’s one of the things I try to teach my students – how to write piercingly.”

(Helmholtz Watson in Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, 1932)

Australian kids have a lot to say, and the buzz of their stories can be overwhelming. Yet, when asked to put their thoughts on paper, their minds too often go blank! This is a tragedy.

As an experienced Senior English ATAR marker, NAPLAN marker, and primary teacher, I can see the gaps in student learning across year levels and sense the unspoken frustration hidden between the lines of their writing. With Huxley's words pinned to my desktop, I feel his prod to help students find the words to write piercingly - precisely - and reach their full potential in English.

That’s why I created TeacherTalk - to help students understand the Australian English curriculum (version 9) and equip them with the tools they need to find the words to write precisely.

As both a teacher and a parent, I understand the challenges of the classroom and the importance of support at home. As students move between year levels and experience different teaching styles, PowerPoints, and photocopies, confusion often creeps in. TeacherTalk cuts through that confusion by providing tools that are meticulously aligned to the Australian Curriculum (Version 9) and provide a clear pathway from Foundation (Prep) to Year 12.

In my experience, when students are given the right tools and the space to express themselves, the ideas that flow onto the page can be truly inspiring - words that cut through, like X-rays, to reveal the depth of their thinking and ability.

If you share my vision for transforming English education, I’d love to help you get started. Together, we can give students the tools they need to think, write, and inspire - empowering them to be brave in our new world, to challenge ideas, and to use their words to inspire a brighter future.
